JACKSONPORT, AR (KAIT) – Search crews recovered the body of Justin Calvillo, age 23 of Newark, around 9:00am Saturday. His body was found about one mile downstream from where he was last seen at the convergence of the White and Black Rivers.
Dive crews came into contact with Calvillo's body in the White River Friday but were unable to recover it.
According to Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas, divers from Lawrence County and Pocahontas found Calvillo's body in about 18 feet of water, but the current moved him before they could remove him.
The search will resume Saturday at 8 a.m., as authorities continue combing the water Friday night using sonar technology.
Sheriff Lucas says Calvillo, of Newark, went swimming Thursday morning with three other people near the intersection of the White and Black Rivers. Calvillo's friends told police around 6:30 a.m. that he floated off from the group, started struggling and never reappeared.
Lucas said the rescue mission then became a recovery effort.
The Sheriff's Department, park rangers, the Jacksonport Fire Department spent the early hours of Thursday morning dragging the rivers and set up a command center at Jacksonport State Park.
A dive team from Independence County assisted with the search until late Thursday night.
Lucas thanked the Jacksonport Fire Department, the Arkansas State Parks, Independence County Sheriff's Department Dive Team, the Pocahontas Fire Department Dive Team, Randolph County Sheriff's Department, Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission for their help.
