HEBER SPRINGS, AR (AP) - The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission says water releases from an upstream dam on the Little Red River are planned to help cool the water and protect trout at the popular fishery.
The agency said Wednesday that the water temperature downriver from Greers Ferry Dam topped 80 degrees at Ramsey Access and 70 degrees at Lobo Landing.
Officials have blocked stocking of new trout until the water temperature is more favorable. Until the temperature lowers, only the cooler, upper portion of the river will be stocked.
Rivers across Arkansas have experienced very low flows due to the heat and drought. Officials are working to conserve water in reservoirs because the drought is expected to continue at least through the end of August.
