Lightning strike sparks fire on Sugar Loaf Mountain | News
Hikers are being urged to avoid a popular trail in the Ozark Gateway.
The Army Corps of Engineers says a lightning strike Wednesday sparked a fire on Sugar Loaf Mountain near Greers Ferry Lake.
Emergency responders are aware of the fire; but, because of the extreme terrain and remote location, fire crews are letting the fire burn out on its own.
So far, more than five acres have burned.
According to an email from the corps, a walking trail is working as a firebreak to prevent the fire from spreading.
Visitors are being asked to not hike the mountain as long as the fire is active.
Other hiking opportunities around Greers Ferry Lake include the Mossy Bluff and Buckeye trails located near the project office, the Josh Park Memorial Trail near Dam Site Park and Collins Creek Trail in John F. Kennedy Park.
