Man accused of writing bogus check to bail out girlfriend | Crime
A Region 8 man apparently wrote a bogus check to get his girlfriend out of jail. Now he’s behind bars.
Matthew Edison Tillery is being held on charges of forgery, theft of services, parole violation and habitual offender.
Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery says on Sunday the 29-year-old Cotter man forged a check and used it to post bail for Jessica Smith.
According to the investigators the $450 check was written on a closed account.
On Monday deputies arrested Tillery and booked him into the Baxter County Detention Center.
During the booking process, Montgomery said officers found additional blank checks on the closed account in Tillery’s possession.
Tillery is being held in lieu of $10,000 on the theft and felony charges; however, he is being held without bond on the parole violation.
He is scheduled to appear in Circuit Court on July 11.
Smith was arrested on theft of property and breaking and entering charges. Investigators say she stole a 4-cylinder car engine worth $800 then sold it as scrap for just $13.
